of Martial Arts Videos.
Martial arts videos are more useful for learning technique and practicing skill than reading a martial arts book, but they do not replace a qualified instructor. They also miss out on the whole group learning aspect of martial arts. There is no one to spot mistakes and no one to practice with, but they are a good practicing aid, and many are made solely for entertaining purposes.
Some martial arts video are not made for instructional purposes at all, but are made to entertain. There are many kung-fu movies that have impossible moves and fighting techniques that have helped to cement martial arts into popular culture. The martial arts taught in a dojo are much different from those found in movies.
Martial arts videos, when used for learning purposes, should only be used as a training aide, not the teacher. Learning from a video only shows the student how to do something from one view. Practice does not get critiqued so the student often learns incorrect movements that can cause problems as more information is learned.
