Karate Sparring Gear

Karate Sparring GearThough the study of Karate dates back hundreds of years, the idea of sparring (Kumite) is a fairly recent addition to the accepted training techniques. Prior to World War II the practice of Kumite was not considered admissible due to the lifestyle that was associated with being a dedicated Karateta (karate student). However, post WWII, many karateta expressed an interest in practicing their art in a more real life combat setting.

Because of the inherent dangers in practicing any form of combat, Karate sparring gear is highly recommended. This equipment is designed to minimize the risks involved in full contact fighting. It should be noted that sparring should only be done under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Karate sparring gear can include a number of different items, but the most important piece is probably the protective headgear. While bumps and bruises are to be expected during a sparring match, a direct blow to the head can have devastating, permanent after effects. It is therefore extremely important that the head be well protected while practicing Kumite.

Quality headgear will be an effective combination of form and function. It should be lightweight enough so as not to be cumbersome during a match, yet provide adequate protection in the event of a direct hit. Headgear should always be properly fitted to the specific wearer. The easiest way is to visit a local martial arts supply store and try on several different sizes, but many online retailers offer sizing charts to assist internet shoppers.

Hand and foot protectors are essential pieces of karate sparring gear. These are designed not only for the protection of the person wearing them, but also for the protection of the opponent. A set of fully enclosed padded gloves or padded covers that are secured around the palm and wrist are the most common types of hand gear. They are intended to protect the hands from injury, but also help protect the opponent from the full impact of a direct fist strike.

Foot protection generally comes from a combination of two sources; a sparring shoe, and a shoe and shin cover. A sparring shoe should provide a great deal of stability to ensure enough support for the foot while performing various techniques. They should also have a measure of padding across the top of the foot for protection.

Shoe and shin coverings should be included on any list of Karate sparring gear. The most common style covering sets atop the shoe and shin and is secured around the bottom of the foot and around the back of the leg by straps. Like sparring gloves, these provide protection for both the wearer as well as the opponent.

Karate sparring gear can also include a number of other accessory items. Chest and groin protection is very important during a sparring match and there are several different items available for just these functions. Facemasks are popular accessories for a piece of head gear. Most people also recommend a mouth guard be used during sparring matches.

When properly equipped, sparring can be a great way to practice Karate techniques in a more realistic environment. However, just like any sport, safety should be a top priority for anyone who wishes to practice Kumite
