Karate Pads

Karate PadsKarate pads are used for training and for protecting students while sparring. They are especially useful for beginning students who aren’t accustomed to blocking and may accidentally hit harder than expected. Some are designed to be training aides, such as boxing pads which a student can repeatedly hit without harming their sparring partner.

Some popular karate pads are headgear, padded gloves, and padded shoes. These allow students to practice their moves without actually hurting their sparring partner. Another practical piece is a mouth guard to protect bones in the jaw and teeth, as well as preventing bit tongues. Knee pads are also commonly found in many dojos.

Karate pads are highly specialized to the types of strikes that are practiced in karate. A boxing glove is nothing like a karate glove, although they are often made of similar materials. A boxing glove concentrates the padding on the knuckle, while a karate glove is padded only on the back and sides of the hand because most strikes are done with an open palm. This also allows for grabs to be performed because the fingers are free.
