Karate Black Belts

Karate Black BeltsKarate black belts are often considered to be experts in the art form. While this is true to an extent, it is more accurate to suggest that a black belt signifies that the wearer is of a sufficient level that they can be instructors themselves. In reality, there are varying degrees of black belt that denote further training and abilities.

Karate black belts can further advance through additional levels called “Dan”. Advanced levels are denoted with numbers or degrees once a student reaches the level of black belt. In some forms of Karate, the belt can be changed to red once the student reaches the 6th Dan.

A common misconception about Karate black belts is that the color of the belt stemmed from the staining of blood, sweat and dirt over years of martial arts training. The reality is that the belts become darker as you advance in rank because traditionally the belts were re-dyed by the student as he/she advanced. Each resulting color has to be darker than the previous in order for the belt to truly change color.
